Gamification

Drive completion with points, levels, badges and a rewards store, and see how points are calculated.

6 min read

Gamification adds motivation to learning: learners earn points and levels, unlock badges, appear on a leaderboard and can spend points in a rewards store. Used well, it lifts completion without cheapening the content.

How points work

Points are derived, not stored. Lifetime points are calculated from real progress (completed modules and passed quizzes, weighted by your LMS configuration), so there is one source of truth and no drift. The spendable balance is lifetime points minus points already redeemed.

available = lifetime - spent
spent counts redemptions in: PENDING, APPROVED, FULFILLED
DECLINED redemptions free their points back

Levels

  • Bronze I from 0 lifetime points, Bronze II from 150.
  • Silver I from 300, Silver II from 500.
  • Gold I from 750, Gold II from 1100.
  • Platinum from 1500 and Diamond from 2200 (top level).
  • Learners see their level, colour and points to the next level.

Badges

Badges are auto-awarded from rules and recorded as achievements, so feeds and leaderboards surface them without extra setup. Learners see them on their profile.

Rewards store

  1. 1Admins open Learning > Rewards and add rewards with a name, description, point cost and optional stock.
  2. 2Learners browse the store and choose Redeem on a reward they can afford.
  3. 3The redemption is PENDING and reserves the points immediately.
  4. 4An admin approves and later marks it FULFILLED, or declines it, which returns the points.
Because points come from progress, changing completion weights in LMS configuration changes everyone's totals retroactively.
Managing the rewards catalogue and fulfilling redemptions requires Learning administrator rights.
