The org chart visualizes who reports to whom. It is not a separate drawing you maintain: it is rendered live from the manager and department fields on each employee record. Change a manager on a profile and the chart, and every approval that resolves through that manager, changes with it.
Opening and navigating the chart
- 1Open the People module and choose Org chart (route: /people/org-chart in your workspace).
- 2Start at the top of the hierarchy and expand a node to reveal direct reports.
- 3Use search to jump to a person; the chart expands the path to them.
- 4Click a person to open their employee record and see role, department, manager and documents.
What the chart is built from
- Manager: the reporting line. A person with no manager is treated as a top-level node.
- Department: groups people and defines the department head used by DEPARTMENT_HEAD approval steps.
- Role / job title: shown on each node for quick scanning.
- Status: people who have left (deactivated, never deleted) drop out of the active chart.
Why it matters beyond the picture
Approval chains for leave, expenses and requisitions use the reporting manager as the default approver. If the manager field is wrong or empty, requests either go to the wrong person or stall. Treat the org chart as an audit view: an orphaned node or an unexpected manager is usually a data problem to fix on the employee record.
Editing structure safely
- 1Open the employee record of the person who moved.
- 2Change Manager (and Department if it changed) and save.
- 3Re-open the org chart and confirm the node moved under the new manager.
- 4Check in-flight requests: pending approvals already routed keep their current step, so reassign them from Approvals if needed.
